Whittling the WIP list down.

I'm on a finishing roll at the moment. In between working on my weekend project of the Harry Potter Banner as mentioned in my previous post I have been busy slaying parts of the PR Mystery Sal piece.
I think the last time I posted an update on her .. yes by now we all know the end result of this beautiful design,  I had finished part 13.  Well 14 was done and dusted some time in November and I am half way through  part 15 so she is not far from finishing.  This was my progress after finishing part 14 before started 15

Just after finishing the Harry Potter banner on the 20th November I decided I needed a WIP change of pace. I  switched to the Red Quaker sampler that I have been stitching as part of an Aussie Sal this year.  This morning I finished this project. Happy dancing all around, another finish for the year.  A total of 2,  I'm on track with last year rofl. 

Stitched on 32ct white linen 2 over 2 using Dinky dyes Silks 160 Pink diamond and 176 Rosewood. Started on the 29th March 2015 finished on the 27th Dec 2015.

Wow that is two projects started and finished in the same calendar year  What is happening to me?

I have enjoyed stitching this design. I am not normally one for samplers, especially traditional samplers such as this but it was fun to do.  At present I am thinking of hemstitching the edges and turning it into a table runner for the top of my cross stitch cabinet where I keep all my stash. 

A well kept secret - my first finish for the year.

I don't normally make it a habit of stitching gifts for people. I hate stitching to deadlines, but this year I broke that rule early on with a rather large project that I have been keeping secret most of the year. No updates on the blog were posted just in case my daughter happens to follow my posts.

My oldest daughter turns 23 today.  Like most parents through her later teen years we had our ups and downs and a bit of a roller coaster ride with her at times. She is not a bad kid, I am thankful that there was never problems with being in trouble with the law or drugs,  just your typical rebellious behavior. As she slipped into her 20's this started to ebb but she still had no real direction in her life and didn't really look to be applying herself in the job finding department.

Early this year she accompanied me to the hospital to my final appointment where they told me I would be having surgery some time early in the year.  I think this was a pivotal moment for her because afterwards we started to see some serious changes in her attitude.   She started helping me around the house more, knowing she would be needed when I was laid up after surgery for a number of weeks,. She actively started looking for work and the bit that floored me the most. She actually apologised for all the angst she had put us through and her crap attitude and behavior.

That was when I knew I was going to make her a very special gift this year.   Emma is a huge Harry Potter fan, being the first lot of kids to grow up with the books etc. Once she got bit by the HP bug it became a huge part of her growing up. She loves the books, the movies, everything Harry Potter. Nearly every Christmas and birthday something Harry Potter in nature is given to her ever growing collection, but this year this one thing couldn't be bought it was made.

The family and some of my Aussie facebook groups are the only ones that knew I was stitching her the huge Harry Potter Banner from Cloudsfactory.  I could only work on it on weekends as she stays at her fiances parents place on weekends.  So from the 28th of February until the 20th of November I stitched away when ever possible all the little elements and characters.  I decided even though it was huge to get it framed to keep it pristine and she was given it last night (Christmas night ) as an early Birthday present in front of all her friends and family who were here for Christmas.

Needless to say she was gobsmacked.  She did cry a little. She admitted she had no idea at all.   I puffed up in the knowledge I had kept it a total secret from her all year which isn't easy. The best bit was I had shown her this chart about 2 years ago and she had said you need to stitch this Mum and my standard reply was.. why don't you learn it's an easy one lol.

I don't normally review patterns that I finish and post about but I would like to start doing something along those lines to pass on some helpful information for anyone who needs it.

The chart is very easy to read and follow.  You can either stitch from your computer via adobe as it arrives in pdf format or print it out if you like a hard copy to cross off  like I do. I stitched this piece on 32ct over 2 with DMC,  by memory I think I used a fat half cut of fabric.   You can use aida if you wish as there are minimal fractional stitches and some french knots but I would recommend only going as low as 28ct  on evenweave to make the characters slightly bigger. I used 32 ct as that was what I had at the time.   Some of the little elements end up very small on 32 count.

I only used the recommended DMC light effects metallic thread in certain elements and not all where it is recommended,  as I hated using it.  Nasty stuff in my opinion. I should have changed it to Rainbow Gallery  Petite Treasure Braid.
Also I would recommend anything other than white fabric.  Some of the elements such as owls etc are stitched in B5200 but I found they were not showing very well so I went back and back-stitched around them to make them pop a bit more.  As I said previously I had the fabric on hand otherwise I would have considered doing it on a parchment coloured type of hand dyed fabric  such as colour cascades Gold-digger old map style   or something very similar.

I thoroughly  enjoyed doing this project and have a few more of the clouds factory charts on my to do list for other family members. Youngest daughter is a huge Dr Who fan so I guess the clock or something is next.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

It has been a number of months since my last post and I have been very busy in that time but I wanted to pop in this evening.. it is 9.28 pm Christmas night here and wish all my stitching friends around the world a very Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays where ever you are in the world.

The rotation has left the building.

Being a stitcher with many WIP I often have a rotation of sorts so that my many (currently 10) WIP get some love.  I've tried many different rotations that are around.  

Firstly there was the 10 hour rotation.  Stitch on a project for 10 hours then swap. My problems with this - clock watching, it made me obsessed. Not to mention I was often switching projects every few days which was annoying as I had just got into one and it was time to switch.

Then I went to the weekly rotation.. I had the same issue with the 10 hour.  It might take me a good week to really get into a project if I have been busy and then it is time to switch again.  This progressed to switching every two weeks and then that became the once a month switch.  Now I often work on a screaming monthly rotation working on the project that screams at me the loudest for a month.

However of late I'm finding myself stitching on one project for longer and longer.  I have so many that are half finished or closer that  I am chasing a finish.. something I have not had many of in recent years.

Since 20th of July I rotated back onto the Passione Ricamo  starting part 11. This what where I was up to at end of part 10

Part 13 finished as of 19th September (photo taken at night so fabric looks more purple than blue) 

I've actually started replacing the long rows of beads with 1 strand of satin DMC B5200 and 1 strand of cotton DMC B5200. The lower straight rows are stitched at the moment as I still need to remove the beads on the sides and top. I'm much happier with the stitches. I was not happy the straight rows did not stay well 100%  straight. 

At this time I plan to move on to part 14 unless another WIP screams at me louder!

UFO's - not the space kind.

UFO's as stitchers we all have them. You know what I am talking about those Un-Finished Objects -  projects we have not stitched on for at least 12 months or more that go from being  WIP status to UFO status.

I currently have two. One of them is Joan Elliott's The Sewing Room. The last time I stitched on this piece was November 2012!.. Yikes.. almost 3 years since I had picked this piece up.  I was about half way through the piece too.

So for the last week of  May one of the Aussie Facebook stitching groups I belong to decided to have a little UFO week long challenge. To select a WIP or UFO that had not seen any love for a while. After a week this was my progress.  

Not as much progress for the week as I had hoped but something was better than nothing. So happy was I to get back into this project I decided to continue working on this piece for June and into July so by the 18th of July I had made great progress on  the chair area. 

So no longer in the UFO pile I hope it doesn't take me another 2.5 years to pick this piece up again :)

Samplers, and Fairies for the months of April and May 2015

Hello everyone,

It has been a while again, Life has been a blur since I went back to work and only now have I found time for an update.
Last post I was back stitching on Twisted band sampler still on limited duties at home.  In 10 days I had gone from this

to this on the 18th of April

Heaps of progress and so glad those greens where over.. I was getting so tired of green lol.

By this stage I decided I needed a break from stitching on the black. My eyes are not what they used to be, and grabbed my Red Quaker Sampler for a quick update for Aprils section, which I managed to get done in a few hours on the evening of the 19th of April.

After this I decided some time on Firefly Fairies would be fun so switched projects again and spent a month with the fairies again. The green fairy is now complete minus a few beads.

 I have found a rotation on a monthly bases keeps me stitching and I get a fair bit done before I rotate onto the next project,  and I don't burn out constantly switching.  I've previously tried the 10 hour stitching rotation.. this got tedious fast, then a weekly rotation.. now I do a loose month long  rotation and found this to be the best.  Would love to hear from others who have a rotation and hear what works for you.

A bit of this and a bit of that

April already, Easter has come and gone and the weather in Australia is cooling down. We are entering Autumn (Fall) here though you wouldn't know it,  as it is still fairly warm during the day just a little cooler in the morning and at night.

My last update was a while ago and a heap has happened since then. I have progressed on the PR Mystery Sal - photos below and forgot to update you all about it and March's IHSW which kind of didn't happen, the reason being is that on the 25th of March I went into to hospital for surgery.

All went well and I was home after a few days. I don't resume work until the end of April and I am on limited housework duties which gives me a heap of stitching time, so I will have lots of updates on WIP and some new projects.

Before my op I had been working on my PR Mystery Sal. I have now completed up to part 10.  Parts 11-14 are waiting for me not sure when I am going to get around to them. Too many WIP not enough time lol.

I'm still not sure about the long beaded rows. I picked up some DMC white satin thread the other day. I am going to do a few stitches next to the beads and compare and decide which way to go next time I get this project out. 

While recovering from surgery I decided to do a new start something a little simpler while my head was still not quiet into complicated stitching.  Some of the Aussie girls on Facebook are part of a Sal and one of the two design choices is The Red Quaker Sampler a free design  available from needleknowledge.com which I have chosen as my Sal piece. I'm not normally into traditional samplers but one of the other ladies is doing this in purples and it looks simply stunning.  We have split the design into 12 parts for the year.  I  have selected to do mine in two Dinky Dyes silks. Rosewood 176 and Pink Diamond 160 stitched on 32ct white linen.

I started stitching on the Sunday evening after coming home from hospital - the 29th,  once my brain had de-fuzzed some what and by Good Friday I had managed to get January - March complete. 

Since Easter I have been working on Twisted band sampler again. My last up date on this WIP was back in December last year 

Yesterday morning (Wednesday 8th) I took a quick photo to see my latest progress as sometimes it feels I'm getting no where with some of the specialty stitches and was quite surprised. 

Since then I have finished band 6 and 7 and half way through band 8. Told you I wasn't allowed to do much of anything but stitching at the moment.. total bliss :) 

Well that is it for the time being hopefully it won't take me another month to post an update.

Time for a Taj Mahal update plus February 2015 IHSW report

Can't believe it has been just over a month since my last blog post.  Time flying again, we are almost 2 months gone this year already!

I've spent the last month blissfully progressing on  my Chatelaine Taj Mahal Mandala, I'm now well past the half way point.

Last time I updated Taj back in November my progress looked like this.

My progress from 23rd January to the 4th February.  I really started to make progress on the middle section. 

Then on the 15th February it looked like this. I didn't realise my needles had been smoking until I saw the before and after shots and how much of the middle I had got done in 11 days lol. 

I took another photo at the start the weekend of IHSW so I could see my progress before and after the weekend. My main focus was finishing the middle and getting some progress on the right hand Taj. 

February IHSW ended up being a very good stitchy weekend. In fact stitching was about the only thing I could do Friday night and Saturday day. We had two cyclones up north. One in the Northern Territory which had no real impact on us and the second was Cyclone Marcia due to hit up north Friday night or Saturday morning. Brisbane received heaps of rain.

Friday it rained all day so once I got home from work it was time to settle in for the long haul. It was predicted to rain all day Saturday and possibly Sunday too. I even made sure to have batteries for my little clip on LED lights and my rechargeable light charged in case of power loss. It was IHSW after all. Nothing was going to stop me lol.  My goal of finishing the middle section - cross stitches achieved and a good start on the right hand Taj. I so love this design. This is where I leave Taj's progress as of 22nd of February as it is time to catch up on the PR Mystery Sal before the next part comes out but firstly I'm off to check out everyone else's IHSW efforts.

Under the moonlight - Part 7 finished! And a Happy Dance!

In my last post I mentioned how hot and sticky the weather had been in Brisbane recently.

Well thankfully after a week of horrid sleepless nights because it was just too too hot to sleep, the weather changed and cooled down to a much more comfortable stitching temperature from about Wednesday.
In fact it's been raining here all day today, rather pleasant after the sticky heat of last weekend. Perfect stitching weather in fact!

Last night I finished part 7 of the PR Mystery Sal - Under the Moonlight and here it is..

We are starting to see a few more features other than then border. Part 8 comes out next week and is worked under where part 7 was just stitched, so hopefully more features of our mystery subject will be revealed. I'm looking forward to trying to keep up with the Sal as the parts get bigger without neglecting my other WIP"s... gotta love a juggling act lol.

Now this week I also happen to have had a bit of a happy dance. Not the finishing a project happy dance but a happy one none the less. 

Anyone that loves Nora Corbett/Mirabilia designs,  knows how hard it is to get their hands on  the OOP  Tigerlily chart from Nora's Pixie Couture Collection.

 I have been looking with no success for a while.  I am a member of a facebook group for Australian stitchers to unload stash,  and I decided on a whim to ask if anyone who had her was willing to part with her. 

I wasn't expecting much success mind you. So you can imagine my delight when not only did someone have her but they were willing to sell her and for a very reasonable price too!!  It just goes to show you don't know until you ask.  She arrived in the mail yesterday. 

It is a holiday weekend here in Australia as Monday is Australia Day. I am hoping for a cooler weekend than we had last weekend and to spend some time with family and also hopefully get back into working on Taj Mahal Mandala. Maybe  I might also try and work out what fabric I will stitch Tigerlily on and when I am going to find time to squeeze her into my rotation.

January 2015 IHSW

Ack I am late with  my IHSW update.  Work sure does get in the way of blogging and stitches  some days :)

No photos this time around they are coming in my next post. I spent the weekend working on the PR Mystery Sal when I could.
 It was so hot and sticky here over the weekend that I found I couldn't sit and stitch for more than half hour at a time.
I got way too hot under my stitching lamp and trying to stitch with sweat rolling down your face is just wrong.   I was hoping to get part 7 finished but keeping cool was more of a priority. The minute you went out of fan zone you were dripping wet.

I hope everyone else managed to get more stitching done for the weekend than I did. I will be off to check out everyone's blogs later this evening.

A month with the Firefly's

Wow time flies when you are having fun.  A month ago I was wishing you all happy holidays and new years and here we are 14 days into the year.
I certainly hope everyone is healthy and well as the new year strides along.

I have kept busy over the last month.  We have quite a few birthdays in December and January so that along with Christmas makes it very festive.  As per normal I ate way too much yummy food and now resolve to get some what into shape.... round is a shape right? :)

After I put the PR Mystery Sal away I picked up Lavender & Lace's Firefly Fairies.  I have always loved this design and kind of started it a few years ago.  I braved the bleaching of the sunburst, which wasn't really has hard as I thought it would be. More so worried about destroying a perfectly good piece of fabric I guess. Then I had stitched the first star and candle-shine at the top of the design and that is where I left it. I'm not sure what year it was but 2003 for some reason keeps popping into my head! The fabric is 32 ct which suggests it was around then as these days due to my aging eye sight I find I prefer 28ct most of the time.

I had everything I needed but the beads, and they were on their way, hopefully they would turn up before Christmas while I was on my two weeks vacation.   So on the 14th of December I set about restarting. I left the original first star but unpicked the candle-shine as I wasn't happy with it and restitched it.

10 days later on Christmas Eve this is where I was up to. By this time my beads had arrived and I was starting to add some beads in too.

Then on New Year's this was my progress... 

So amazing how much stitching you can get done when work doesn't interfere with your time lol.

Nearly a month after my restart they are looking like this. almost half way done.

This is where I will leave the "girls" at the moment. Part 7 of the PR Mystery Sal is now out so I will be working on that and then Taj Mahal Mandala is calling my  name for some attention.

Under the Moonlight - Parts 3 - 6

Hot off the scroll frame, parts 3-6 of the PR Mystery Sal.

Progress as of 13th December 2014

I'm all caught up again until January.  I spent the last few days stitching when possible due to being in hospital for minor surgery on Wednesday. So made the most of my time off  from work and stitched stitched stitched!

I'm still a bit worried about the long row of beads, trying to keep them straight. They seem to go wonky every now and then and I know I am not the only one with concerns regarding this.  A few of the ladies are actually replacing the long straight rows of beads with DMC Rayon in white and it looks rather good.

I am persevering with the beading at the moment but I do worry that it will go wonky just prior to framing and being a tad OCD it will drive me mad if any are wonky once framed.

Well we have around 11 days to go before Christmas and I'm not sure if I will manage another update before then so I will take the time to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays,  and a Safe and happy new year no matter where you are in the world. May you get to spend some time with the ones you love.

Twisted band sampler update

I have just realised I had forgotten to share my recent update on my Twisted Band Sampler.

Since August it had been neglected as I was working on Taj Mahal Mandala Garden so much. So I decided to spend some time on it last month after starting the PR Mystery Sal.  I love stitching this design the silks from Threadpickerz are so lovely to work with and colours so bright. The bands stitch up fairly quickly  but I must admit those Norwich stitches in band 6 are evil, especially when stitched on 32ct black!  They really had me testing my patience and I did pick up one or two that I have made a mistake in but if anyone can spot the mistakes they are doing really well :)

This was my progress before last month.

And my progress as of 30th November - 5 bands done almost finished the 6th. As you can see I have reached across the top to both sides now and have started working on multiple bands where I can to avoid moving the hoop so much.

Under the Moonlight Parts 1 & 2

The new Passione Ricamo Mystery started back on November 3rd, you can read a little bit about it here in my previous entry on the subject.

So far I have stitched parts 1 and 2 of the sal, I ended up delaying my start as I changed my fabric choice. I personally felt my original choice was too light for the theme of this design. It was a lovely lighter blue more so that of an afternoon sky rather than a night sky and as the name of the design is under the Moonlight the design does call for something darker.

I ended up getting a fat half of Cosmos hand dyed 28 count Jobelan from Stitches and Spice. This is everything all assembled ready for the start on the 15th November.

And on the afternoon of the 16th, parts 1 and 2 were stitched. 

As Christmas is often a very busy time of year we have parts 3-6 to work on over the holidays, so hopefully we can all find some time to stitch the next 4 stages which is mostly more of the border stitching and beading.  I am hoping to at least get parts 3 and 4 by this weekend and then parts 5-6 over Christmas. I have vacation time over Christmas for two weeks so I have plenty to keep me busy :)

Still plodding along with Taj Mahal Mandala

Hello my lovely stitchy friends :)  I hope those of you that are in the US are keeping warm in the very very cold weather you are experiencing and are hopefully safe and not snowed in too much.
Looks like you are all in for another super cold winter this year.  The perfect weather to stay in side and stitch! Unlike here as we enter  our summer we have just experienced a weekend of  very high temps of around 40oC or 104oF, makes for very sticky stitching weather.

I've been plodding along nicely on Taj since my last update and have made a heap of progress. slowly working my way through the middle section.
The detail in this design is simply  magnificent. I can see why many stitchers become hooked on Chatelaine's they are a challenge but a magical feast for the eyes as they develop.

My progress as of  14th November 2014

As you can see I have almost stitched a quarter of the middle square plus the left hand Taj Mahal is taking shape. The colours are simply glorious and I have really enjoyed learning some of the specialty stitches that I have never done before.  I worked some of the woven scotch stitch in the lattice type border around the middle square recently. While it  took me a little while to get my head around it, eventually with a little help from google and some tips online  I got there in the end :) I hopefully will get some close up shots next time I take some photos.

Passione Ricamo Mystery SAL 04

Has anyone else signed up for the Passione Ricamo Mystery SAL?  Titled Under the Moonlight.
Yep I've been naughty.. added another WIP to the pile!  Well when it is started in November.

Oh where am I going to find the time? It is not like I dont already  have a gazillion charts I want to stitch. Oh well at least I'm having fun and staying out of trouble haha.. just spending more on stash than I should. Good job I didn't do this years sewing from stash challenge :)

Taj Mahal Mandala Garden - 6 parts done 6 to go.

I can't believe it has been well over a month since my last update.  Since my recent finishes I have been steadily working on Taj again. I've completed 6 parts of my 12 part chart and slowly moving into the middle section.

I say slowly as I have taken to wasting more time playing computer games than stitching some nights.  While the will to stitch is strong.. getting butt of chair is not so I end up spending more time than I intend on the computer each night.

Not 1 but now 2 finished - Diet Kitty 2 finished!

After having a marathon finish on Maggie the Mess Maker earlier this month I decided to pick up an easy project before concentrating on Taj Mahal Mandala Garden, as my main focus piece.

So I decided to work on Diet Kitty 2 seeing as I had him almost half done.

Before this month I was up to here on him 

And now, he is finished and awaiting framing with Diet kitty 1. 

The fabric looks white in the photo he is actually stitched on  28ct miracle mint Lugana which I swapped for the aida that came in the kit.

So very happy to have not 1 but 2 happy dances of late it has been a long time between finished until this month.

Finally a finish for the year!

Phew finally I find five minutes to be able to share with you all that I finished Maggie!!!!!  Yes finished.  At 12.02 am on the 6th of September!

Life has been so hectic since I finished that I haven't had time to share the news until now. My first finish since 2012 and what a finish!  The photo is not the best I was very bleary eyed at 12 am lol.

August 2014 IHSW

Twisted Band Sampler was the WIP of choice for this weekends stitching.  While the weather was wet as predicted here in Brisbane over the weekend, with the very much needed rain. I didn't managed to get as much stitching time in as I was hoping.

Friday night I ended up crashing in bed at 8pm too tired to stitch,  so Saturday I had grand plans once the housework was done. I did managed to get a few hours done on and off during the afternoon. It is slow going stitching on 32ct black. Then around 5:45pm we lost power for a few hours due to a car hitting a power pole near us. Impossible to stitch on black by torch light. I did consider it quite a few times lol.

Sunday saw more progress and even though I did not get as much done as I had hoped I did managed to finish the 2nd band, completely stitch the 3rd band and start the 4th one.

Now back on to Maggie for the rest of the month. Inching closer and closer to a finish.
